Results for what to do during an earthquake at home

During an earthquake at home, stay inside and protect yourself by following these three steps: Drop, Cover, and Hold On14.

  • Drop to the ground to prevent being knocked over by the shaking4.
  • Cover your head and neck: get under a sturdy table or desk if possible; if not, crouch against an interior wall, away from windows, mirrors, or anything that could fall14.
  • Hold On to your shelter (the table or desk), and be ready to move with it if it shifts4.

Additional details for safety:

  • If in bed, stay there, turn face down, and cover your head and neck with a pillow, unless there is a heavy object above you that might fall—otherwise, move to a safer spot nearby14.
  • Stay away from windows, glass, outside doors, and walls, as well as tall or unsecured furniture13.
  • Do not run outside while shaking is happening; most injuries occur when people try to move to a different location indoors or exit the building during the quake14.
  • Avoid using elevators, matches, candles, or any flame due to the risk of gas leaks and fire2.
  • Be aware that power outages and triggered sprinkler or fire alarms are possible during and after the earthquake1.

Remain in your safe spot until you are certain the shaking has stopped and it is safe to move or evacuate14.
